Old Mac upgrade to Catalina

I have an iMac 27" late 2013 running El Capitan. Can I upgrade to Catalina? If so how do I do this?

Yes, you can upgrade to macOS Catalina. First, backup all data using Time Machine if you have not done so already. Next, use Safari to get the macOS Catalina App Store download link here: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support. Finally, follow the prompts on the "Install macOS Catalina" App.

Yes… your iMac meets the requirements for Catalina.. which are here:https://support.apple.com/kb/SP803?locale=en_CA.. i’d suggest you log into the App Store with Safari using your appropriate ID, whichever one you use to login to the App Store and download Catalina… safari works the best for downloading stuff from the App store as it automatically opens App store links in the App store

hope this helps you

Although a macOS upgrade should not delete any data, sometimes things happen. That's why it is always a good idea to have a backup. Furthermore, for data backups, I would suggest you purchase an external hard drive, such as a G-Technology G-DRIVE mobile USB-C Portable Hard Drive - Apple, for a backup and start using Time Machine: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.
