See if the speaker is even seen: 

1. Go to: Apple menu
2. Select: About this Mac...
3. Click: System Report... button
4. Select: Audio (on the left of screen)
5. Look For: this Speaker

If Not...

Reinstall the macOS:

If nothing is shown, then drivers went missing somehow, in which case, you'd reinstall the macOS. Nothing would be deleted.
