I have received today a new 2 TB Crucial X8 External SSD. I have it attached to my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) via a powered USB 3 hub.
Do I need to eject the X8 before I shut down my iMac?

I will be using it to boot into Mojave now and then so that I may continue to use some software that is broken by Catalina onwards, namely LightScribe and Stereomerger amongst others. I might even go back as far as the OS before Mojave, if I could recall what it was. High Sierra was it?
I have a spare Thunderbolt 2 port available on my iMac but I don’t think this works with this SSD. At least, not without some kind of adapter.

You did not mention what you are using the X8 for? But in most cases, NO you should not need to eject it before sleeping or shutting down.

No you will need to keep it connected directly to one of your iMac’s USB 3.0 ports, which should give you pretty good boot time and a run speed of around 480 to 500 MB/s.
