USB-C on M1 Mac mini

I have a M1 mini/16GB/2TB and I have a Roland V-02HD MKII plugged in directly from the USB-C on the Roland to the USB-C on the back of the Mac mini.

I get data and power but no audio via the USB-C ports. The Roland unit is USB standard. No drivers needed. I plug this into a Windows computer with USB-C and it works fine. I need this to work with my main studio units. I see older units working on older Macs. I end up having to jam everything into USB-A jacks, but this unit is designed for USB-C and has native certification on their website. Is there something wrong with my new Mac mini? This is also not the first USB-C device that doesn't transmit audio just on this Mac. Is this something to do with USB-C 4 cables versus USB-C 3? cables?
