Charging Issues Since Monterey Upgrade on M1 MacBook Pro

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro that I have been enjoying for several months now. On Monday I upgraded to MacOS Monterey 12.0.1 and have been experiencing issues with charging ever since.

When I plug in my charger (original Apple 61w w/ OEM Cable) the computer recognizes it and the device either runs off of wall power or charges for a time, no issue. But inexplicably as the device sits plugged in on my desk, the laptop eventually fails to recognize that it's getting power from the wall and starts draining the battery. I tried using an Apple 96w charger with another OEM cable in the office and the laptop is experiencing the same issue. This never occurred before the Monterey upgrade, and appears to occur regardless of which charger/cable combination that I use.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? I contacted Apple Support, and they had me run the laptop in safe mode for 10 minutes and then reboot, which didn't seem to make a difference. I really don't want to have to bring this into the Apple Store to get replaced under AppleCare+, because I think it's probably a firmware issue related to Monterey and not a hardware failure.

What should I do?

There are any USB-C Hub between the Charging cable and computer ? For best results a Direct connection from charger and cable to computer.

Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

For additional reading on Battery and Apple Computers this link may help. About battery health management in Mac notebooks and especially for the M1 and Big Sur If battery charging is paused or on hold on your Mac

Depending on the Age of the computer, some aspects from the above links, may or may not apply to your computer.

A feature introduced into Big Sur was to preserve the number of Full Battery Cycles - there was an Algorithm coded into the macOS. It is perfectly Normal for Big Sur to Pause / Suspend charging the battery beyond 80% and hold it at that level. One can nudge / over-ride this by clicking the Battery Icon on Desktop Top Bar and allow charging beyond 80%. From observations, it will Pause / Suspend again once reading 90%. Same procedure to over-ride and will charge to 100%

The OP posted verbatim " I have the same issue on the same machine. I use the original charger that came with the MacBook and also the standard USB-C hub of my philips monitor recognized by apple as standard charging hub. Apple is not very knowledgeable about the issue and they are not of much help! "

Let us keep things context and also accurately.

You conveniently ignored the words *immediately before* the ones that you bolded in the same sentence. That user has 2 charging solutions and experiences the issue with both - one of which is the OEM charger. Also, I started this thread and I have never used a USB-C or PD hub - only the OEM charger. This is not a user error issue, this is an Apple issue. Stop trying to make this our fault.

Just because YOU haven’t had this problem doesn’t mean that it isn’t a problem.

I'm having this issue on my 2018 15" MBP. Yes, using the original charger. Yes, also a 3rd party hub. No it is not my fault. Yes it is Apple's fault for not doing enough testing. I'm not on any extravagant odd laptop build, just the base model, I don't have anything weird installed. Apple broke it with Monterey and it wouldn't be even close to the first time their response to a problem like this is "it's not a problem, but if it is, it's your fault". Just holding my breath for a software/firmware update of some kind.

If I have my laptop plugged in to the original power charger, let it charge to full, then plug in my hub at some point, which should have enough charging power to at least hold the charge (I mean come on, that's 2 chargers plugged in to 1 laptop), eventually, the battery just starts to drain, even when my computer has been off all night. This week, every day I wake up to a dead battery, when I went to sleep it was fully charged and plugged into 2 charging sources. This is a Monterey problem.

Also when I notice this happening, the "Charge to Full Now" thing is not available.

I discovered another interesting thing the other day, it only leads me to conclude that this issue is related to high power consumption caused by something intensive running on your machine. I've been able to reproduce the problem at will when I am running docker. I have a docker-compose file that starts 12 containers and when that happens, my fan turns on and in the space of 5 minutes, battery charging stops and it starts to drain, the moment I stop all my containers, everything goes back to normal and my machine charges.

I may have found the proper answer, just sharing it here in case everyone else is in the same shoes, I was using a USB dock for my machine, the Dell D600 to be exact, and I happened to come across this video today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGEBQIr8LG0 I installed the iStat trial version then lo and behold, my machine was barely pulling power from the USB dock (8-10W). I plugged in my original power brick and the thing started pulling in a serious amount of power to charge - with a high of about 73W. This was never an issue before, maybe some update basically deprecated some charging sources but it looks like my dock is useless as a charging station now, it'll just have to be for peripherals, £250 down the drain, this is ridiculous

I have now similar issue with my Monterey Upgrade. I have iMac 2019 and iPad Pro 2020. I have used the OEM charge cable connected to iMac for almost 2 years now without a fail. Last Friday I upgraded my iMac to Monterey, and I cannot charge anymore.

Something's off, everything was working earlier, but after Monterey it stopped. I can charge with the same OEM cable with power plug directly but not with the same cable with the iMac. Apple, fix your thing.

Similar problem.

My MacBook Pro 15" (A1990) isn't charging since update to macOS 12. I tried with many different power adapters (also Apple original) and cables (also Apple original) that work perfectly with the other two MacBooks Pro I have, but it doesn't charge and doesn't even recognize that it's connected to a power source.

MacBook Pro - has only two ports! Using one for direct power connection - leaves ONLY ONE port for everything else! I use a very good USB-C adapter that has many different ports: Ethernet, USB-C, HDMI, USB, etc. But... how many external connections can work well through a single laptop port??? Pretty much ALL external connections (monitor, phone, ethernet router, time capsule, etc.) - have to go through a single port!

Up until Monterey, I at least was able to connect power adapter through this external adapter - and use second port for a wireless keyboard/mouse transmitter (which does not work well when it is connected through an adapter). Now, with the Monterey OS upgrade, power connection through an adapter does not work (resulting in display not being connected in a "clam shell" mode) - which makes me connect power directly to a laptop port and use a single adapter's USB-C port for wireless keyboard/mouse transmitter. This results in keyboard and mouse event delays: missed keypress, mouse movement and button click events. This is SO FRUSTRATING !!!

If direct power connection is now a requirement - Apple at least must be courteous to provide more ports!

This worked initially, but what has worked consistently on my machine is closing all applications, especially Chrome. Once I close all open applications and wait a 10-20 seconds, the dialogue changes from "Batter Not Charging" to "[what ever amount of time] until fully charged." I'm not an engineer, but I get the impression that there my be a driver/software incompatibility with the upgrade to Monterey. I had no prior problems before the upgrade so this is annoying.

After trying every solution provided by this thread, I finally found a solution that works for me.

My new work computer is a MacBook Pro. After waiting for an hour for my computer to turn back on, I used the power adapter and cord from the new computer and within 2 minutes the computer turned backed on. I don't know if this is the solution for every user, but I can't believe it was being caused by the power cord and adapter. I still find it strange that this didn't happen until I upgraded to the Monterey OS.

So, if you are having issue with your battery not charging after you have upgrade to Monterey, try a different or a new power cord and adapter and see if that doesn't fix your issue(s).
