How do I get Monterey to recognize my external hard drive used for Time Machine?

Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? It may be that it's not mounted for some reason. You can also try the troubleshooting steps listed here:

Essentially, disconnect and re-connect the drive. If that doesn't work, disconnect the drive and shut down your Mac. Unplug all other accessories except for the drive, and start the Mac back up.
