Is the 2017 MacBook Air going to be dropped next year?

Im thinking of buying an 2017 MacBook Air most likely next year just to tie me over a bit since I cant really go past Catalina on my old MacBook pro, and i'm a little weary of it because this year the 2013 and 2014 macs got dropped, and I fear next year the new mac os "13" wont support 2015 and 2017 models, since apple seems to have accelerated the discontinuation rate of macs due to them wanting to phase out intel.

I would go with a 2018 MacBook air, but I don't even want to be in any proximity to the butterfly keyboard atrocity (especially since I don't know how long the keyboard program is gonna last for) and a more recent computer is out of budget for me.

Should I expect next year to be the final year of he 2017 MacBook air to have support, or will it have a little longer to live?

Hi Snappycat8000,

Your safest option would be to purchase an M1 MacBook Air (the latest model). It has an Apple silicon chip inside (M1) and shouldn't be phased out any time soon. Also, there's a huge performance leap from Intel processors to M1, and you also get fantastic battery life.

As for when Apple will stop supporting the 2017 MacBook Air, I'm not sure. Personally, I would expect 0-2 more macOS upgrades for that model. That said, once a Mac can no longer upgrade to the newest version of macOS, Apple's unwritten policy is to support that previous version of macOS for two more years with security updates. After that, that version of macOS is completely unsupported, and you could be more vulnerable to malware.
