SD Card Reader SUPER Slow in 2021 M1Pro MBP 16"

My problems on 16" MBP seemed to be fixed by macOS 12.1. Still with the same card, I did a couple of biggish uploads via Finder with decent performance. Then, out of the blue, with another 100 Raw images to transfer (20-25MB each), all the problems reappeared. I have made no changes to the card except taking the extra photos.

I now again see big delays before anything happens. So big in this case (a minute or so with nothing transferred) that I cancelled the transfer. With that also locked-up, and time pressing, I resorted to pulling the card out. That left the Finder unable to see the reinserted card at all (several attempts). Only a reboot resolved the situation.

Roll on 12.2?

Hi. I have the same slow data reading from SD card at my new MACBook Pro 16, 2021. SD card is SanDisk Ultra 80MB/s; 64 GB. I reported now this problem to Apple through link above (Product Feed back...)> The message reception was confirmed, but there will be no personal reply... Apple Team will think about this problem... I want to believe, the problem will be solved soon... and not on the account of users... The device is "high level unit" and expensive and should provide perfect performance. Thanks

I've got the same problem macbook pro 14 2021 ... with sandisk extreme pro V30 64GB very slow compared to ma imac 27 2017 where its instant... if card reader used its OK

error -36 is "I/O Error". That means some data blocks could not be read, even after applying error-correction and retrying a thousand times.

There may be some damage on that card.

Current Card that experienced slow speeds using the internal SD slot:

Same problem here with SD card reader, unusable on an MBP M1 which is about 1 month old. Will update to 12.2 and see if it get's fixed

I'm using an Extreme Pro 95MB/s SDHC V30 UHS-1 u3 10circle and the card reader is extremely slow and will crash. It is an older card, but UHS-I and it is not working. Wondering what else it could possibly be.

..and certain cameras etc like to use their own internal card to be read by USB wire.

Some of mine prefer to not have their cards removed/read by an external reader..

Yet there are no excuses for a newer device to find a card reader so ineffectual. 🙈🤨

Same here! I’ve had my 16inch max for two weeks and I’ve never experienced such slow import/export on Lightroom. I have another call with Apple tomorrow but for the meantime I’m back on my 7 year old iMac! Can you believe after spending £3600 on it!!

mom currently trying to export my Lightroom catalog so I have it for my old computer and it’s now over 1 hour and still not exported 🙈

This is completely unacceptable! I bought this to replace a 2015 iMac; its internal SD Card runs circles around this thing. So disappointed - I feel like many corners were cut to deliver the 2021 M1Pro MBP 16" in some dumb update cycle regime. Apple please develop a fix or issue us refunds for these models. It is absolutely ridiculous to market this to creative pros and have such a slow interface on an internal. Not happy at all.

It would be really useful to have an official Apple opinion on this.

Getting a replacement machine creates a lot of work in rebuilding it, not to mention downtime during the replacement process (and it's very wasteful too). If Apple had a bad batch of card readers then that will be a necessity but it may be a macOS issue, in which case we can just tough it out until there's a fix.

I have been hoping for the latter so am tolerating it for now but it would be polite to tell us what's happening.

Cards formatted on Canon R series don't work on the SD slot of my 14" mbp M1Pro. Whats the deal Apple? Update this useless machine. Could have stayed on my old Intel MacBook with stupid dongles. Slow = unusable.

Same problem here. Took the plunge and changed my old windows laptop to a MacBook Pro and find the card reader is rubbish! All my cards are SanDisk Extreme, 90 mb’s, UHS speed class 3, and speed class 10. Never had any issues downloading before with an external card reader, but didn’t expect that I would still need to use it on my new machine.

The built in card reader was one of the things I was most excited about with the new macbook. To think that they messed this up so badly, just makes me so angry! It was so easy to do this right. And yet they failed.

I can confirm that problem for my SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro (95MB/s). Completely unusable!
