Messages app on desktop (Monterey)

I can't find a way to delete Messages files after updating to Monterey. There used to be a small "x" to the right of each text; they aren't there anymore.

Couldn't find any reference to this in Preferences for the app. Any advice?

Why is deleting a message (aka a conversation) a multistep process? Has there been a serious outbreak of inadvertently deleted messages due to accidental presses of the formerly serviceable X? And after Ctrl+clicking or File—>Deleting or left swiping — all very intentional actions — why am I presented with an unnecessary confirmation box? And why can't I press Return to dismiss the unnecessary box? The Mac OS is supposed to be intuitive, not fiddly and time wasting. Life is short -- please simplify this process!
