windowserver using a lot of RAM

windowsever is the top user of RAM and after about a week brings my system down to a crawl. I have reset NVRAM and PRAM and that only helped for a few days. It does not go down when I close apps and I use default settings for my display and never use and external display.

Any ideas how I can resolve it?

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Have you installed or run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

How often do you reboot your Mac? I shut down every night and boot up in the morning. Having an SSD makes the boot tine very short and not objectionable. Rebooting normally clears out temporary system and application cache and swap files. It definitely helps in general overall performance. You might try for a while to see if the window server RAM builds up like before or remains low.
