Marking messsages
Is there anyway to search for text within a conversation or to mark a single message within a conversation to easily find later?

The Search function is not available within a specific conversation/message thread. You cannot mark a single message for later retrieval.
Good news is that the Search function is available when the Messages app is open and displaying all the conversations / message threads. To reveal the Search Box, Touch and Pull Down on that screen and you will see the Search Box at the top.
