Changing region on my iphone

I live in Japan, but my iphone has the North American regional lock on it. So I cannot download certain Japanese apps. Is there a way I can change the region on my phone to Japan? I am concerned I will lose all of the data on my phone if I change regions.

Use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to change your region

Open the Settings app.
Tap your name, then tap Media & Purchases.
Tap View Account. ...
Tap Country/Region.
Tap Change Country or Region.
Tap your new country or region, then review the Terms & Conditions.
