Is there something in the latest update that would've killed the sound on my apple tv 4k? was working fine until yesterday. i've tried every setting and other devices work just fine through my receiver even on the same input. the device is simply not putting an audio signal out. I've also updated and reset multiple times. Do the audio chips fail in these?
Apple TV 4K, tvOS 15
This happened to me as well. Apparently something broke the sound on the AppleTV 4K when it updated its system software from tvOS 15 to tvOS 15.1. Both my older and newer AppleTV 4K devices stopped outputting sound after the update, but worked fine the day before. The problem appears to be linked to the device it is connected to. My AppleTV 4K is normally connected to a Sony AV Receiver STR-DH830, which stopped playing sound after the update. However, when I moved the AppleTV device to my Sony 65" TV, it worked fine. After spending hours changing configurations and failing to fix it, I connected my older AppleTV 4K to the AV Receiver. It worked perfectly... until it performed an automatic system software update, at which point the older AppleTV 4K also stopped playing sound. So yeah, it's definitely caused by the update. I hope Apple reads this and fixes the problem in the next update, and SOON!

Problem solved (for me anyway). As stated in my original post, the no-sound issue only appeared to occur when plugged into the Sony STR-DH830 AV Receiver. Both Apple TV 4K units worked fine on this receiver before the 15.1.1 update, but emitted no sound after the update. I know I had previously configured this receiver to use an optical audio cable for the older AppleTV, and it continued to work with the 4K AppleTV even though the 4K AppleTV has no optical output jack. Apparently something changed so that the HDMI handshake with the receiver got confused after the update. I finally decided to do a factory reset on the Sony AV Receiver (by turning it off then holding down the power-on button for 5 seconds to clear the settings), at which point the AppleTV 4K sound could once again be heard. I have no idea if others struggling with this problem also used an optical-input setting, but it's worth looking into. Thanks everyone for the feedback. Hopefully this post will help others.
Please try:
· Unplug Modem from it’s power source for 2-3 minutes and then plug it back in.
· Unplug Router from it’s power source for 2-3 minutes and then plug it back in.
· Unplug Apple TV from it’s power source for 2-3 minutes and then plug it back in and retest the system.
That reply is not helpful. I only posted here as a courtesy reply in the hopes that my added information may help Apple find and fix the bug in the latest 15.1.1 update. Thank you for you time.
We are all end users just like you, Apple does not read or participate in these user to user forums. If you want to communicate something to Apple, please use the correct venue...apple.com/feedback.
My suggestion has helped hundreds of others with similar issues, if you do not want to try it that is fine.
I’ve been experiencing similar issue since today, sound randomly fades and then comes back after couple seconds. It’s happening only on Netflix, video keeps running but audio drops off
Apple tv is connected to my lg tv and the sound output if via my soul sound bar.
Have you successfully tried this procedure after having no audio post the 15.1 upgrade?
Absolutely! Mine is connected to a Onkyo receiver and I keep all my electronics firmware and OS's up-to-date. Maybe good luck but so far no issues at all on my system.
I'm having the same issue and it's extremely frustrating. I hope Apple recognizes this and corrects it asap.
