Why is my migration transfer showing up as a duplicate folder?

Hello,

After successfully migrating from my MacBook Air to my new iMac, I now have a folder on the iMac from the MacBook Air in addition to all the files being migrated INTO the iMac. So, it seems that there is a duplicate set of files/applications/etc. (and also taking up a lot of space). Can I delete the Folder on the iMac - since all the files/applications/etc. have migrated directly?

Thank you

iMac Pro

Unfortunately you have managed to make a mess. Please follow these simple instructions:

  1. Open System Preferences on the new Mac (this assumes it has Monterey installed on it).
  2. Under the System Preferences menu (upper left) select Erase all Content and Settings. NOTE This will erase EVERYTHING off of the new Mac except Mac OS.!!!!!
  3. After erase has completed (should take just a minute or so. Then connect the old Machine's Time Machine backup External HD using a USB cable.
  4. On the new Machine run Migration Assistant and follow the on-screen prompts and you are done!

This is what you should have done in the first place, I have no idea how you got yourself into the mess you did but this is the fix.

Ok. I followed the MA instructions from the Apple article. The iMac is brand new: never used. I initiated the transfer from that device. Then, I migrated the data from the laptop directly (no time machine) via WiFi. I did not create a new user. I imported the laptop user.

so, now I have a folder from the laptop user in Finder AND I have the same files, etc (apparently) on the iMac. I might be misunderstanding the Finder folder as a duplicate of what was transferred …

perhaps it’s just the Folder that is throwing me off.

thanks for your help!

No, you have not told us anything about how you migrated. When I get a new Mac and migrate, I connect the old Mac's Time Machine to the new Mac before powering on the new Macs for the first time. When I do power on the new Mac it launches Setup Assistant (as it does with ALL new Macs) and gets to a point where it asks if I am migrating from another Mac, I select. yes and it transfers my data, settings and apps to the new machine, no new user created.

However, if you were using the "new" Mac for awhile then migrated from another Mac to the "new" Mac it will create a new user account and migrated everything into that new user account.

We have no idea what you have done so you need to explain what you did in more detail.
