I downloaded itunes (or Music) to my iphone.
The reason is to transfer my music from my laptop
I thought it was free, but it seems I will have to pay monthly after 3 months.
I am confused.

The Music App is what replaced iTunes.
Apple Music is the streaming service embedded in the Music app.
The biggest differentiator is your library versus Apple Music library. Your library contains your purchases, old converted CDs, etc. Apple Music (the service) contains every song available in the Apple Music catalog.
It gets a little confusing when you search. But, you can change the search location by selecting "Apple Music," "Your Library," or "iTunes Store."

my problem is that I am 74 years old and the words don’t actually help me.
I am more looking for how to do it.
It’s how do I transfer the music from my laptop to the iPhone.

My granddaughter, aged 15, pointed out that I already had access to itunes,
It would appear that the monthly cost to which I referred was, in fact, an advertisement.

So confused. So, "Apple Music The Service" is different from "Apple Music"? How can I distinguish between the two if the icon is the same. Or are there different icons? Terminology keeps changing as do the icons. Thank you.
That's Apple Music (the service). You can sync your library to your device and play your music without subscribing to Apple Music. Play the music from your library.
