If you have an iPhone 12 or 13 with 5G cellular you can update over cellular.

If you don't, you will have to update over WiFi or on a computer with iTunes installed or a Mac running Catalina or later.

You will have to meet all of the following requirements to update your iPhone over cellular data:

  1. Have an iPhone 12 or an iPhone 13
  2. Have iOS version 15.x installed on the iPhone
  3. Have 5G service active on the iPhone
  4. Have Update over Cellular checked and set to ON.

If you do not meet the above requirements , then you cannot update your iPhone over a cellular connection. You will need to update your iPhone over a Wi-Fi Network or by connecting your iPhone to a computer with an internet connection.

  • Updating Over Cellular:

See Here: Use an iPhone 12 or later, that is using 5G, in order to update over Cellular - User Tip

  • Have Ethernet?:

To Check for Updates:

Use a Computer and Ethernet:

Start with attempting an update through use of a computer. If you cannot use Wi-Fi, then use Ethernet.  Go Here: Update your iPhone Using a Computer - User Tip. On the computer, you would connect it through Ethernet, going directly into your router. For a Mac (or PC) that does not have Ethernet, this would be the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple. If you get the same error, the model is likely just not compatible.
