I hope you understand my dilemma.
i was texting my friend who also has an iPhone. Somehow their contact switched to my number and when I clicked on the thread to see the contact it showed my number. Then there was a message that went through as if I sent it, but it was actually a message my friend sent me.
any ideas why it would do that? Do they know my password?

Open your contacts app and locate your contact card and your friend's contact card. Ensure that the phone numbers are shown accurately and are not mixed up between you and your friend's contact card.
Do both of you, by any chance, use the same Apple ID on your iPhones? If, YES then what you are seeing can happen.
If you suspect that your friend knows your Apple ID password, then change the password to your Apple ID. You can do this by opening Settings ➔ Apple ID (Your name at top) ➔ Password & Security ➔ Change Password.
