Upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur, worth the effort?

Hello,

on my Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) I have always been with Catalina.

Now I am thinking to upgrade to Big Sur doing a clean install of it.

My question is simple, is this worth the effort or is it just a waste of time of a risk?

Please advise, thanks.

since you are on catalina, there will be no issue with non-compatible 32bit apps. you should also check your 3rd party apps for big sur compatibility. but, yes, IMHO it's always best to run the most recent macOS your machine is capable of. (which for your mac is actually monterey) running the most recent macOS also ensures you are using the most up to date security features.

but as of now, both catalina and big sur are still supported and getting security updates. as well, big sir has been updated and well tested by now and should run with little to no issues for you. if you want to stay with either of the former, you would do well to keep them updated with their respective security updates.

EDIT: you should always make a backup before upgrading macOS.

Should I upgrade to Big Sur, would I have performance issues or?

if you have a fusion drive with the tiny 28GB SSD portion you will have performance issues. with the fusion drive with the larger SSD portion, or if you have 100% flash storage, you should not have performance issues.

And in terms of bugs, have most of Big Sur native bugs been solved?

in my situation i don't remember encountering any bugs that affected my mac with what i use it for.

Thanks for helping,

you're welcome. :)
