Migration to new iMac

I currently run a iMac which is about 10 years old. Lately I have had issues like iMail, iMessage, not working properly, slow to load up and web pages not found etc. Which I have not resolved. But now think it time to upgrade to new which I would like to do.

Does the migration assistance process transfer all the same settings. As not wanting the same issues that I already have on my iMac.

Is it a case I have to resolve the outstanding issues on my old iMac before migration to new.

You can tell Migration Assistant (or I'd recommend migrating using Setup Assistant but more on that later) to migrate:

  • Settings
  • Data
  • Apps

For each category it is an all or nothing process. This means if you select "Settings" it will migrate all of your settings period. If you have legacy 32bit apps on the old Mac, they will NOT run on the new Mac which requires 64 bit versions. Check each of the 3rd party apps you want to migrate (look at roaringapps.com) and if you any that are still 32 bit upgrade them prior to migrating. Then backup to TIme Machine!!!!!!!!!

For your migration to go smoothly please follow the Setup Assistant process in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. This is the quickest and most reliable method. Please read the information in the link carefully.

I just did the migration this very morning creating an external SSD as a bootable "Disaster System". Since CCC no longer creates reliable clones, I chose to Install Monterey and then use Migration Assistant to migrate data.

Worked perfectly. When the SSD booted, it was as if it was the original Macintosh HD itself: users, settings, apps, network ... everything was migrated with no errors.

I did not migrate MS Office 2019. On the Disaster system I'm using FreeOffice; didn't want to have to deal with activation issues with Microsoft.
