Different amounts of available RAM to 2 administrative users on the same computer

My wife and I both have administrative accounts on our 2017 iMac which has 8GB of Ram and is running MacOS Big Sur. For a long time now my wife's account appears to be running much slower than mine. This appears to have been confirmed by a recent purchase of CleanMyMac X. If both my wife and I are logged in, without opening any new files, we could both run Activity Monitor and for example on both our logins it would say between us we are using 5GB of memory with 3GB free. On my account this is confirmed by CleanMyMac which says I have 3GB of free memory. Logged in on my wife's account CleanMyMac will say something like there is just 150MB of free memory despite Activity Monitor saying there is 3GB. Trying to free up memory using CleanMyMac doesn't free up any new memory, we are just stuck with 150MB of free memory whilst I have 3GB! My account certainly runs much faster than my wife's! What is going on?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

If one has CMM installed and depends on that software to Solve issues it may have caused, it would seems that is the Real Source of most issues.

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with nor receive compensation from the Developer.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

As others have said, the fact that things run more slowly on one account depends directly on what is being used and stuff like login items, launch agents, etc.

You are not running the exact same things.

As suggested already, I recommend running Etrecheck from the affected account and post its report here.

Then we can see if there are things there using extra resources that could be causing the slowdown.

(and, as said, even if cmm did not cause the problem, it is not going to help, quite the opposite; you should get rid of it asap)

CleanMyMac X, The jackpot for harmful software.

A testament to this, the first 600 posting all pointing to the same thing - invitation for disaster.

Remove as per Developers Instructions.

Depending on the extent of the corruption, modifications, deletions of elements of the OS - it maybe necessary to reinstall the OS Post Removal of this software in an attempt to but the OS back to working order

RAM is not allocated on a User by User basis. It's allocated by the OS to the various processes running on the computer. There is no way to tell the OS that User A should have 3 gigs of RAM and User B have 4. It's just not how it works. Memory management on your Mac is complex and sophisticated. It's designed to use all the RAM available - after all what's the point in having 8 gigs of RAM if you don't use it all?

So forget this RAM twaddle. Your wife's account feels slower. But. not after logging out and back In again. What apps is she using?

If your wife's processes are slower, then RAM is not necessarily the cause of it. You are focusing on only one thing when you should be examining the entire account as to what could be causing it.

Having CMM is not helping and, unless you uninstall it, there is nothing we can do since anything it reports is suspect.

Download, run, and post the results of an etrecheck report; frankly, I do not know if that can separate two user accounts, but it is worth a try. It is an excellent diagnostic tool developed by a longtime contributor here.

We seem to have lost our way and are not Addressed the Real Issue. IMHO

"CleanMyMac" is known and reported extensively on the ASC Forums to be harmful, unless and even creates issues.

That specific suggestion to remove this application as per Developers Instructions - until that is resolved in the interest of good Apple Computer experience and computing.

What is clear is that my wife's account normally runs much slower than mine when using programs such as Safari, Mail etc. We obviously use different apps whose current allocation of RAM and cache are highlighted in Activity Monitor with our associated usernames.

These are associated with your usernames as they have different caches in each account because you each surf differently. I would wonder what sites your wife has open on her Safari when the problem arises. I have seen performance issues tracked down to stuff running in the background of a Facebook page, for instance.

Try using a different web browser in each account. See what happens.

Thanks Yer_Man,
Logging out of my account didn't resolve the issue, however logging out of my wife's account and back in again allowed her to access the available RAM. How long this will last is open to question.
As I previously said this has been going on a long time so it appears to me as a relative novice that at some stage we reach a point where my wife's account "refuses" to free up some of the memory it has been temporarily been using with the consequence that when it wants some extra memory for a new process then there is little space left. I hope this sort of makes sense.

Have you completely uninstalled and removed CleanMyMac from your computer? It seems to me that the troubleshooting cannot even start until you uninstall and remove it.

Use of RAM depends on the apps being used - are you saying that both you and your wife have the exact same apps? I would think one of you is using an app that requires more RAM. Also, please note: the new OS versions are set up by default to use all of the RAM available - the reasoning: unused RAM is wasted RAM. And, 8 GB of RAM is about the recommended minimum for the newer OS versions, so I wouldn't be surprised if all of it is being used.

Checking Activity Monitor, as long as it shows green, you are good. There is no need to worry unless it were to show red.

And yes, do uninstall the useless software.

Many thanks for your helpful comments.

The situation is that my wife's account has consistently run much slower since purchasing the Imac. It appears CleanMyMac has identified that my wife's account is short of RAM for whatever reason. If there is some process specific to my wife's account running hot, which I think is the crux of the problem, how do I identify this? It doesn't appear to be showing up in Activity Monitor.

Thanks Yer_Man and everybody else who has replied. I appreciate your time.

Totally understand the point on how the Mac tries to maximize it's use of RAM. What is clear is that my wife's account normally runs much slower than mine when using programs such as Safari, Mail etc. We obviously use different apps whose current allocation of RAM and cache are highlighted in Activity Monitor with our associated usernames. What appears to be the issue is that when I go to run a new app is that I have a much greater amount of unused RAM available to me than my wife which allows the app to open faster etc. My conclusion is that there appears to be one of my wife's apps that is "holding" onto a large amount of RAM that doesn't show up in Activity Monitor and only affects her usage and not mine. I don't know if this is possible and if it is how you would identify the offending app. (As I have previously said when we run Activity Monitor we get the same results for the amounts of RAM and cache available so I'm most probably totally wrong!)

Thanks P.Phillips for your helpful advice.

Can I just say in my defence that the issue with the slow running of my wife's account has been going on for over 2 years. I always thought it was one of her apps that was causing the problem but nothing showed up in Activity Monitor. In desperation I have trialled CleanMyMac, downloaded just in the last 10 days, and it appears to confirm the issue that my account has much more available RAM than my wife's account when a new app is loaded and run. Hence the difference in response. Deleting CleanMyMac, which I intend to do, will IMHO not resolve the problem.
