Safari browser keeps opening random strange websites I don't want

Hello -- My MacBook Air is suddenly, irritatingly opening random websites unprompted in Safari. One is called "fizzsby.com" and appears to be filled with articles about trends and tabloid type news. The other is a fake Mac support page.

These websites open at random times while I'm using Safari. I've looked through my Safari extensions as well as my applications folder and can't find anything unrecognizable (malware/virus/etc) to delete or change to make it stop doing this.

I would love to make it permanently stop.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.6

Salutations jbmcnabb,

We understand that you are encountering pop up messages/windows in Safari.

Here are some steps to take

About pop-up ads and windows in Safari - Apple Support

Allow or block pop-ups in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

To isolate extensions, you can try disabling them all, checking to see if the issue persists and if it does not, enabling 1/2 of them again, then testing. If it comes back, disable all and enable only half of those, etc. Or you can do them one at a time.

Additionally, clearing history and website data is helpful in this situation

Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac.

Thank you.
