Can’t email from Notes app?

Had been collecting info… screenshots, text, etc in Notes app on my iPad.

someone asked if I had info on the topic, so sent them a copy of the note via email (Mac mail on iPadOS via a gmail account). I added detailed notes in the body of the email, and added an additional photo from Photos app. Hit send…

went to check on the email in mail and found it in the outbox, hit send again…. Now it’s all gone.

besides being incredibly frustrating and a huge waste of time, I’ve been liking and using Notes more and more — but if it is this unstable, I can’t use it. For anything.

is this common?

Thank you for your reply, and for sharing your thoughts and experiments with us.

Seems iPhone Mail and iPad Mail may each work a little differently,

and iOS versions may also differ between the two. devices.

  • It is often worth updating each device to the latest iOS versions for each.

Apple have a few articles online (links below) about e-mailing with attachments on iPad.

You may wish to browse any that seem useful.

(NB: Choose your iPad's iOS version at the top of the article for the most accurate info.)

Hi cag4,

Welcome to the Apple Community,

where some of us do our best to help each other troubleshoot.

Sorry sending email has been frustrating for you lately.

If I understand it correctly:

Emails generally only go to the outbox, if the connection with the e-mail server is busy, or unavailable via your e-mail provider.

(Such as when your e-mail provider (Yahoo, Gmail etc) is receiving a large volume of mail, has an outage, or is updating things.)

or ... if the e-mail address isn't valid, or is missing ... and thus the e-mail can't be sent.)

So "Notes" was likely doing it's part ok, even though your Mail app. wasn't able to connect with the provider's server at the time.

(Wondering if the recipient actually got the e-mail after you clicked "send" from the out-box ?)

Even if the copy you tried to e-mail is "gone", you may have the original still intact in "Notes" app ?

If you need more info:

Apple Support have an article online:

"If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch":

(You can choose your iOS at the top for accurate info for your particular iPad)

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201419

Hope this helps you :-)

Hi — and thanks… I now think the problem has less to do with the Notes app, and more to do with the picture I added to the email (in addition to the Notes content).

I replied to another email with some text and an inserted image and saw the same behavior again: hit send and the screen went black and then Home Screen (mail app still appeared in app picker, but closed on screen), and the email disappeared (not in outbox, sent or anywhere)… replicated a few times.

used my iPhone to create same reply, same text, same image… worked as expected.

something about iPadOS, photos app, and mail (and possibly iCloud since I use it for photos)?

Not really sure where to start looking…
