Notifications and associated settings have been heavily revised in iOS/iPadOS 15.x.
So as to preserve privacy - and hide sensitive notifications from prying eyes - the default setting for many notification categories is to hide notifications when the iPad/iPhone is locked.
This behaviour can be changed, in iPad settings, for each Notification category. Using Mail Notifications as an example:
Settings > Notifications > [Lock Screen Appearance] Show Previews - select from
Choosing Always will show the Notification text on the lock screen while the device is locked; using the default setting will show the Notification, but the associated text will be masked while the device remains locked.
If Notifications for the category are enabled, but are not appearing at all (masked or otherwise), try disabling the Notification category. Again, using Mail Notifications as an example:
Settings > Notifications > Mail > Allow Notifications - set to OFF
After disabling the Notification category, close the settings App. Subsequent re-enabling of Notifications should clear the problem.

Your reply wasn’t very h3lpful as it was all the steps I had gone through with apple support on 3 different occasions. But I was googling how to get notifications on my I phone as well, and a mention was made about notifications from my gmail account rather than the iPad gm@il icon. So I went to gmail itself, looked at settings / notifications and saw that there was now options as to which type of notification’s you could have come through. It was set to “urgent “ . I switched it to “all”. This morning I got notifications on the locked screen! Hurrah!
one of the reasons I upgraded my iPad was because a lot of apps weren’t compatible with iOS 12 and needed a newer iOS version to work. I did notice that a lot of my old apps have a new look and they must have “upgr@ded” when I activated the new pad, including “gmail”.
hope this helps someone else having the same problem.
thanks for trying to help.
I’ll try it, but I think the 3 different apple support people have tried this multiple times. We get it working for one email, but when I lock the screen for the night, the next morning we are back to no notifications on the locked screen. Only when I open Mail do the pop up, not even 2hen I unlock the screen!
Problem still not solved!
