Superdrive

Okay, I did all the things suggested concerning everything was set correctly to see the Superdrive, including reset SMC, but can't see it. Restarted. It shows in the system report under USB, and shows correct CD, but I still can't access.

please forgive me if you mean you already did all of the following:

with the superdrive connected to the mac, you can check in System Preferences and see if it's shown there.

if you mean you can't see it in your finder's locations, or on the desktop, the superdrive won't show up in those places until you insert a disc.

also, to see it on your desktop you need to go to Finder Preferences > General and ensure "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" is selected.

and to see it in your finder's locations you go into Finder Preferences > Sidebar in the "locations" section and ensure "CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices" is selected.

By the way, unless you have a Mac with a built in Superdrive, the "CD&DVD" pane is no longer displayed in System Preferences:

sorry but that is incorrect.. i'm on a 2019 iMac. so obviously no internal CD / DVD drive here. and i have CD/ DVD in system preferences with my apple USB superdrive.

FWIW, the Superdrive will never show up on your desktop. The only thing that will show will be a CD or DVD. So, have you inserted one? Its icon should show up on your desktop if you have the Finder preferences set. It will either start playing or, if blank, you should get a pop up window asking what you want to do with it.

that's a good point. when i said "the superdrive won't show up in those places until you insert a disc." i should have said the disc shows up, not the drive itself. thanks. :)

Yes, it would, but it doesn't. I only see the drive in the system report and disc utility, but that's the only place there is any indication that the drive and the cd exist. The system knows it's there, but it doesn't show the disc image in finder, and therefore, I can't get any data from it.

Jeffery - You hit the nail on the head, and it did load a dvd, but I did get it to show this: "apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49153." It appears that many people are having the same issue after upgrading to Big Sur. Unfortunately, this happens on every image disk supplied by my client, and these are originals, not copies. I am bummed, but at least I can play videos while I cry in my beer. Thanks everyone for all your assistance.
