Why does my iPod second generation’s Screen go suddenly black And quit? I have two of these and I want to know if there’s a fix for this software/hardware problem?

Hi melmanart,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help with a second generation iPod touch. It sounds like the screen is going black and shutting down the iPod.

It's possible this is a battery issue. The second generation iPod touch is now considered obsolete: Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty. Parts won't be available from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

However, you may still be able to find service and replacement parts from third-party sources.

Have a fantastic day!

melmanart,

Thanks for getting back to us. We don't have any further information about the issues you are experiencing on the iPod.

However, you could try restoring to factory settings: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. You'd want to make a backup as detailed under "Get your device ready". If the issue remains after this, then it is likely hardware related.

Keep in mind, you'd want to have access to the music library you originally synced with. The backup will not save any music on the iPod nor will it perform any type of reverse sync if you have a new computer without this music library. Please see: Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer.

If you have purchased music from iTunes, you should be able to download it again with your Apple ID: Redownload music.

Cheers,

Thanks for Your suggestion about a new battery, and where to try to purchase it or parts to replace them. I realize the iPod is obsolete; nevertheless, I still use it with my Bose iPod speaker. The problem is it’s done this behavior of the suddenly going black and shutting down since I originally got it. When I had mentioned it to somebody else who coincidentally had an iPod touch 2nd generation, he said his 2nd gen. iPod touch, did the same thing! That made me wonder if it was a problem with that particular model. If so I was wondering if there was a fix for it? Hardware or software bug fix.
