Iphone 4 in car with bluetooth

Hello. maybe someone can help me? when i start my car (09 acura tsx) my IP4 automatically connects to the hands free link bluetooth in my car. as soon as that happens its like the phone goes on silent mode. if i get a text message, the alert sound does not occur and if i go to write a text message, the "clicking" noise that happens when you press the buttons does not occur either. the IP4 will ring during an incoming call though. the problem is i would also like to know if i receive a text while driving but i never know because like i said there is no alert sound. does anyone know why this is happening? also, this is my first IPhone so forgive me if it is something simple. thanks.

Hi, sorry I don't know the solution for your problem but I do know that your iPhone does in a sense go into a silent mode when it connects to your car's bluetooth. This is because when connected, any audio or sounds from the iPhone should be taken over by the car.

So if you're not hearing anything coming from the car I'd suspect it's not going to be a fix on the iPhone but on the car's bluetooth / phone settings instead.

One thing I have heard however, is that if the volume on the iPhone 4 isn't turned up high enough the car won't play the audio. This was in regards to playing music over bluetooth but it's worth a try if you haven't already 🙂

thanks for your reply. i should have noted that the bluetooth connection works fine. i get incoming calls through the car speakers etc. no problems there. its just that when i had a blackberry connected to the car bluetooth i would get the alert sound when i received a text message. this alert sound doesnt happen with my iphone though.

hmm strange, I get an alert sound through my car's speakers when I receive a text message on my mine. But I'm also usually playing music from my iphone at the same time so I think that's why, I think when I have a music source other than bluetooth audio selected then the alert sounds from the iPhone itself.
Sorry couldn't be of any help, maybe someone else here will know.

this happens with certain brands of players, especially when you switch from aux-in to bluetooth audio.
what you do is this :
go to the ipod app of the iphone.
when playing music , click on the icon (either bluetooth icon or speaker icon ) on lower right corner .
this brings up a screen, select either "speaker" ( if you are not using aux-in ) or "dock out" ( if you are using aux-in )
important thing is *not to select the "bluetooth" option* ... it will mention something like Ford MY Connection, or the bluetooth's players name.
you will get all the sounds back.

for exactly this reason, i have to use my iphone's ipod in the car with aux-in ... if i try using my ipod classic , with my iphone for just the bluetooth , i have si milar issues ... no SMS alerts.

as someone said in another thread , the iphone iOS4 has the bluetooth audio automatically over-riding everything else .

a nokia paired to the same cars player will not have this issue of no SMS alerts.

Tim, I have a 11 TSX and I am having the same problem. I just switched from Android to the 4S, I also had no problem with Blackberry and Android. Now with Siri this is extra frustrating because you can now read and write texts without taking your eyes off the road. That is if I knew I received one.

Please let me know if you find a solution, for the present mine is keeping phone in my pocket so I can feel the vibration when I receive a text.

Your in-car system supports A2DP audio streaming. When an iPhone pairs with an A2DP capable device, all audio is routed through the bluetooth connection. If you had the stereo set on the Bluetooth (usually 'Aux') input and were streaming from the phone, you would hear the alerts. There is not way around this. The only possible option would be to disable A2DP on your in-car system which means you could not stream audio over bluetooth. The hands-free system should still work. See your owners manual to see if this is possible. A2DP can not be disabled on the phone.

Okay, I found a way to do this (easy when you see it.) Alerts go through the car speakers when playing music through bluetooth, but I often like to listen to the radio during which...no alerts. So, at least on the 4s, you can tap on "Music" and start a song playing. On the ipod screen that shows something playing, there is an airplay icon at the bottom right. You can tap that and select which source to send the audio to...PLEASE DO ALL THIS WHEN YOU ARE NOT DRIVING!😉 So now, I'm on board with my new silly friend SIRI...

Like I say, too simple...why isn't that documented?(maybe it is, somewhere)
