Launch
Applications-> Utilities-> Activity Monitor-> View (menu)-> All Processes-> Memory (tab)
Look for processes that are consuming 10’s of gigabytes.
Thanks Bob, that's the first thing I always do. Turns out Firefox multiple tabs is a contributor. Also found out that every tab acts like a separate application (never had this problem in old Macs...)
And every icon on the desktop, even just a simple text document, acts like an app. So I also keep my desktop pretty clean...
But it basically comes down to - the way I work - I need an extra RAM stick installed...
If you are on Monterey, this has just recently been discovered. So you might want to check if you have a custom cursor setting, as maybe it was not just Monterey

Whew!???
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.
Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…
Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...
<script src="https://pastebin.com/embed_js/KuvnghqA"></script>
The important part of the above is between the quote marks...

If pastebin is a problem for you then workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
my Finder keeps adding memory to trigger your system is running out of memory shutdown. Somehow my Force Quit applications area is showing my Finder adding memory to it, on the right side. Is this another Apple screwing with your computer to try to get you to spend more money? how can it be stopped?
Also, how much free space is on your Hard Drive?
Nearly a TB
Thanks BDAqua, see my reply to Bob...

It is a bug.
It is an operating system warning that you cannot disable unless you alter the quanta of applications you are running in the available RAM for your Mac.
