Why are the thumbnails in Photos just gray, with a gray cloud in the center? I can't see what the photo is unless I click onto it and it takes awhile to show up?

Are you using iCloud? Do you have "optimise mac storage" set? Or is your mac still syncing with iCloud.
It means the photo is not downloaded yet. The delay when opening is the time it takes to download that image.
