iPhone 12 and 13 are compatible with the MagSafe Charger without a case. If using cases they must be MagSafe compatible or thin enough to allow the magnetic connection to be made. Thick cases that are not MagSafe compatible specifically may not let the connection be made correctly.
iPhone 8,X,XS,XR and 11 are compatible with MagSafe charger but it will not actually snap into place on the charger without a compatible case, it will only work as a regular Qi charger if you correctly place the iPhone on it.
Earlier iPhone models will not work, unless they are encased in a Qi or MagSafe compatible case.
When using Qi only, charging may be slower than normal on most iPhone models.

Don't place credit cards, security badges, passports, or key fobs between your iPhone and MagSafe Charger, because this might damage magnetic strips or RFID chips in those items.Â
If you have a case that holds any of these sensitive items, remove them before charging or make sure that they aren’t between the back of your device and the charger.

If you keep your iPhone in a leather case while charging with your MagSafe Charger, the case might show circular imprints from compression of the leather. This is normal, but if you’re concerned about this, we suggest using a non-leather case.Â
