Wipe hardrive on a Mac that won't turn on

My 10-year old MacAir finally died and I want to recycle it, but first I want to wipe or destroy the hard drive. It won't turn on and I can't take the back off without special tools. I went to the Apple store and they agreed to recycle it, but won't guarantee what happens to the hard drive because they outsource the recycling and have no control.

What do I do?
