External hard drives still running slow on Mm M1?

I read in another forum that the Mac mini M1 originally had unusually slow read/write times to external drives. Has Apple fixed that problem since then?

Hi.

I had the problem with a Samsung 970 NVME in external case with Jmicron controller in Big Sur. R/W where around 3/400 MB/sec. Now, with Monterey, works correctly: 6/800 MB/sec. Plese note that while the SSD is a nominal 2.800 MB/sec read, there is a limit of 1GB/sec in the external box. Therefore 800MB/sec in read is normal.

External drive read/write speeds depend on the type of external drive and connection.

Please share,

what external drive(s) you currently you have?

what external drive(s) you are looking at buying?

how are you planning to use those external drive(s)?

Plus you do not need an ultra fast drive for Time Machine or making Clone backups.

For Time Machine and Clones you want reliability like,

the Lacie that Apple sells

or perhaps a Samsung T7

Thank you for extending a helping hand by alluding to the fact that the Mm port, cable, and device must all be capable of the speed one is shooting for. From reading product reviews it has become apparent to me that many don't do their USB homework and that their disappointment is self-inflicted.

Thank you also for taking the time to suggest some models of external drive. I have a barely used Seagate 7200 RPM HDD and an Extension portable SSD on hand, either of which I can use for Time Machine backups when I purchase a Mac mini M1 with 256 or 512 GB onboard SSD. For working files and active storage I like what I've read about the Version 2 SanDisk Extreme and Extreme Pro portable SSDs.

Your links introduced me to the https://eshop.macsales.com website. Do you shop there often? How would you rate the quality and durability of their OWC-branded components?
