Disk Utility will not format USB to GUID. OS 11.5

I want to load OS 11.5 onto a USB drive. The drive is 500mb and has been erased with DU.

DU will not partition or format to GUID which the OS requires.

I have tried with thumb drives and Hard Drive. Trying to make a bootable drive for emergency.

iMac 27″, macOS 11.4

Is it 500MB or 500GB. The OS is 16 GB, so would need to be at least that big.

In Disk Utility, you must erase the entire device, not just the mounted volume. To do so, select Show All Devices from the View Popup Menu button. You should be able to select the device and then erase with GUID partition map.

Bootable what...

A bootable clone of your Mac internal drive on an external drive use Carbon Copy Cloner: https://bombich.com/

A bootable USBinstaller— follow the instructions here: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

I downloaded 11.6 and got it to go to external drive.

I was under the impression that it needed an INSTALLER...?

Or can I use it off the external drive??

Purpose= I just had a RAM chip fail. In the process of that failure I was trying to load Monterey. It would not install. Instead, Mojave got installed and was very bad. It rebooted, Firefox would not run. Safari crashed, Etc. Also, my main 10T external drive could not be found.

I took to Apple and they found the bad chip, removed and loaded 11.5. Imac is fine now, but having to reload everything as the Update also wiped out TIME MACHINE!!!

FYI- the bad chip was a 16 from Crucible. They are replacing for free.

So, that I am having SO much fun- do I need an INSTALLER on the external OS 11.6 drive???
