My time machine is not working reliably. The genius bar sold me an external drive, but would not help me back it up. I need help so that I don't delete everything and can't get it back.

My MacBook has almost no space left on the hard drive. System takes up 90% and interferes with all the other functions of the mac book.

Time machine will not erase ANYTHING. Just use the article to start it up.

Time machine is easy and awesome, and works at low priority in the background, so you can continue to use your computer as Time machine does its job making an Additional copy of your files onto the backup drive, and does not delete anything.

Went to the genius bar with MacBook pro and time machine. The apple rep said the time machine was not working properly and sold me an external hard drive to back it up, but he didn't have time to back it up and I'm not comfortable doing it by myself.

What I understand from your posts is that you are currently backing up to your internal drive thereby causing it to become full and unusable. Backups should be done onto an external drive. Maybe this is why the clerk sold you an external drive.
