Free AT&T Wifi Hotspots

Hello.

I don't understand how the free AT&T wifi hotspots work. Are iPhone supposed to just automatically connect to them when you're in Starbucks or wherever?

Whenever I'm in airports like Midway, where I thought AT&T partnered with the wi-fi provider, it never gives me access.

Anyhow, just trying to understand how to use it...

Thx,
ALF

I understand accessing wi-fi hotspots are free with iPhone, how should one access an ATT hotspot when using an ATT data card on Macbook?

The AT&T Communication Manager software lets any windows PC to get on their hotspot. But the software does not work on Mac and ATT **DOES NOT** support Mac either, which is ridiculous.

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/internet/accessing-wifi.jsp says

Is really a PC better than a Mac on the topic of getting on an ATT wi-fi hotspot?? Really???
