use this article to identify and remove the biggest boat anchors:
What is “Other” storage on a Mac, and how… - Apple Community
.
First off you might want to empty your waste bin. Find it in the dock, usually on the far right. Right click it and hit Empty Bin.
Next you want to learn where the majority of your files are and what taking up the most space. To view your storage details, click on the Apple icon > About this Mac > Storage. This will give you a basic look at what's on your Mac in terms of apps or files ect. If you then click on Manage, it gives you some options to remove uaneccessary stuff and clutter. For example, this is mine..
From there you can click on Review Files, next to Reduce Clutter and it will give a closer look as to which folders contains the most content. If you find that you do not want to delete anything you could temporarily move files from your MacBook to either a USB hard drive or maybe iCloud. Don't forget also, that there may be other users that have significant amounts of storage too, so get them to check also.
File that take up most space are application files (.DMG files) and video files. If you have any movies or tv programmes on your laptop you can delete or temporarily move, they will give the biggest jump in available space.
Removing .DMG files is good too. These are files that your Mac needs to install an application but you don't need to keep those files once its installed (unless you delete and install said application frequently). Go to your desktop and the hit command key & 'F'. recommend starting with the .DMG files or application installers. You shouldn't need them anymore. The same goes for .ZIP archives.
That should be more than enough to get you going and your update done.
Hope this helps. :)
