Mac OS crashes post SSD replacement

Hi All,

I recently replaced SSD on my MacBook Air 2017 with Western Digital 500 GB NVMe drive. Since then Mac OS has crashed twice and both the time it was while awaking from sleep. I have attached crash logs for reference. Any help would be appreciated. I'm on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1.

Thanks,

Darshan

I have the exact same issue after upgrading the SSD yesterday. What is the basis for saying it's the brand of SSD versus some sort of NVMe setting? I'm not sure what the true answer is, but if it's the brand can you cite the actual issue with it so I can be sure to research and reference that with other brands?

The Kernel Panic the OP posted references the SSD. In my personal experience this error is usually associated with the SSD, but the OP is also using an unknown third party SSD Adapter to make the third party M.2 SSD work. I've seen numerous posts on these Apple forums over the years where the general consensus is to use the Sintech adapter when using a standard M.2 SSD with a Mac. I've recently responded to a couple of similar posts and when the user changed to a Sintech Adapter their third party M.2 SSD worked fine.

Keep in mind that the standard M.2 SSDs are not made to work in a Mac. Users will get no support from the M.2 SSD manufacturer for using their SSD on an unsupported platform since it also requires a third party SSD adapter that the M.2 SSD manufacturer does not make, sell, or recommend. Even on a general PC (non-Apple computer) not all SSDs are compatible in all systems.

I suggested trying the Sintech adapter first and if the third party SSD still does not work, then try another brand of SSD. Like I mentioned in my other post OWC makes a drop in replacement SSD to fit Apple's proprietary SSD connector plus OWC provides full support for the SSD in a Mac.

You don't mention which SSD Adapter you are using. It seems the Sintech adapter works best according to all the posts I've seen on these forums. If it is not the adapter, then you should try using another brand of SSD. The only fully supported third party SSD is the OWC Aura SSD.

Make sure to keep your original Apple SSD in case it is ever needed to perform a system firmware update.

I replaced the Apple SSD in my 2016 13" Retina no touch MacBook Pro using a Sintech adapter and a similar drive to yours. It went perfectly ... I thought. Everything ran well up until the first restart.

At every restart, it started to restart and then kernel panicked, every single time. Neither Sintech nor the SSD maker had any suggestion that worked.

I finally put back the Apple SSD and all has been well for over six months.

I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure and now it serves as a 1TB, very fast, TimeMachine backup. Certainly overkill, but at least it's useful.

It will most likely have more Kernel Panics or other intermittent issues in the future so be prepared. I highly recommend keeping the original Apple SSD in case it is needed in the future. Make sure to have frequent and regular backups.

Good luck.

I don't know if this issue is common. I haven't seen many people reporting this, though there are good number of people upgrading their Macs with third party SSDs. Most of the times people will buy SSDs from E-commerce sites. When I bought it I did not find anybody reporting this issue in reviews. Also almost everywhere it was mentioned that it is compatible with MacBook Air 2013-2017.
