Messages app freezes every time iPhone 13 charges overnight

My Messages app has been not functioning properly on iOS 15.1 for over a week. It freezes and only shows a blank screen. This happens consistently when it is left on charge via mag safe overnight. Every morning, the app opens to a blank screen. Closing and reopening the app does nothing. Only a power cycle gets it back, but then the process repeats when I charge it again at night.

The first time it happened was during the day. I am not 100% certain, but I believe I was using messages when I got a call. After I ended the call, the Messages app was blank. Again, I’m not certain, but I believe that description to be accurate. Since then, it has happened nightly whenever I put the phone on charge overnight.

Even worse, I confirmed that messages sent to me after the phone is on charge (and the Messages app glitches / freezes) are NOT received. For example, my phone went on charge at 9 pm last night, and a message I was sent around 10 was never received. That message does not show up on any of my devices using Messages (backup phone, iPad, all on ios15.1), nor did it show up after I power cycled the Phone 13 and got the Messages app back this morning.

I have found at least (2) others who mention the same/similar problem on another social media app/site.

I have updated to 15.1.1. No change.

Other odd behaviors include Messages opening to certain threads, rather than the main screen of all threads, or even the thread I was last writing / reading in. I can close the app from a conversation thread with person “A” and reopen the app to a thread from person “B.” Or close the app from the main screen / list of threads and have it reopen in the thread from person “B.”

I shared a screen recording with a senior advisor earlier in the week and am waiting to see if there is a response from an engineer.

I may try charging without the MagSafe, but I’m running out of options.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Exactly the same happens to me too, except I’m not using MagSafe charging. My iPhone 13 mini on 15.1.1 has to be restarted once every day. A couple of weeks ago my phone was just working fine. I have noticed this freezing on random occasions, even during the day when I wasn’t charging my phone. Whilst Messages app was frozen, I’ve tried to access Messages settings and the whole Settings app froze too. Closing the Settings app made it work again. I’ve tried to access the FaceTime settings (whilst Messages still in frozen state) and that too caused the Settings app to freeze. Everything else was working. Again, I had to reboot my phone to get the Messages app to work.

Have this exact issue also. only temporarily resolved by restarting iPhone 13 Pro.

Always associated with charging. Only messages app. Charge by USB.

my iCloud backup is under 10GB and messages in iCloud is quite small (3.2GB) as I tend to delete old messages. Hopefully apple fixes this in an update I it’s a nuisance to setup from scratch again. I would do this if I could be guaranteed of it fixing the issue.

Restoring the phone does *not* solve it, it seems. I can only get to between 24-36 hours after erase and restore before it starts happening again.

At this point, the only thing I haven’t done is turn off Messages in iCloud, which seems to have helped some people (and the people who describe signing in and out of iCloud may not realize that it automatically turns iCloud Messages off upon sign in).

In the meantime, please click the “me too” button if you’re experiencing this or contact Apple Support via phone or chat. The more they know are affected, the more likely this is to be addressed. Thank you!

The issue persists. In addition, my iCloud backup is not working properly, and there are definitely problems with Messages in iPhone storage.

That said. I appear to have found a work around:

Charging the iPhone with a 5W charger does NOT seem to freeze Messages. Using a 20W, 30W, or charging from an iMac definitely does recreate the problem.

Until Apple does something, give a 5W charger a try.

I didn’t get a chance to post or mess around with this over the holiday weekend, but the issue came back the next morning after my last post.

At that point, I left Messages in iCloud disabled because I didn’t have time to deal with the issue over the weekend. As expected, I had zero issues.

I called Apple Support and the first tech ran me through the basics which we have all tried here, plus having me disable iMessage and FaceTime in their respective sub menus under Settings. They also checked my addresses against my Apple ID address. I told the tech about this thread and showed him while I was screen sharing. At that point he said “I found it”. When I asked what he found, he said the issue of Messages screen turning white or black when charging on 15.1.1. This was promising! He next said I needed to be assisted by a senior “specialist” (not the exact title he used, but senior *something*). I was then transferred to the senior specialist and she said she wants me to erase my phone and set up as a new phone. Balloon deflated.

I didn’t have the time for that tonight so she is going to call me tomorrow afternoon. Way more time than I want to spend on this, but it is what it is. I did ask about having to wait for 24 hours for the issue to resurface and she didn’t seem to think that would be necessary. We’ll see.

More to come tomorrow.

So yesterday I took the leap and my phone was backed up, erased and set up as a new phone. No restore was performed, it's as if it were brand new. 25 hours later and we're still in good shape when I plug in the device. The phone did not backup to iCloud last night though. The manual backup I did before erasing is still the latest backup. All iCloud data is back on the device - messages (back to 2015 with attachments), photos, files, notes, calendar - everything.

Erasing the phone before unpairing my watch prevented my eSIM in the watch to be setup during the re-pairing, so I had to call AT&T to re-provision the SIM in my watch.

On a positive note, the phone is snappy and works very well! Of course there are only stock apps on it...

I'll provide another update tomorrow.

72 hours later, everything is still good. I am confident enough that I am starting to re-personalize my phone again.

The net-net of erasing and starting as new appears to be just losing my apps. Everything else is as it was.

You could backup your phone to a computer to separate from iCloud and try starting from new. This way, if you run into any trouble, you can always go back from a local copy that you have control over. Just a thought.

Good luck my friend. I’ll pop back in if anything goes sideways on my end.

I’m really happy for you…that’s great!

I wish I could successfully retrieve all my messages from iCloud without errors…I’m stuck having to use a full Mac backup to successfully retrieve them, which makes starting from new an difficult choice.

When you say “separate from iCloud,” what exactly do you mean? I do have full Mac backups as that’s the only way I can guarantee I get all of my messages back.

Regardless, I’m glad you’re past the issue…thank you for your time and help!

This happens to me as well.!

At first I thought “focus” was the issue as it started to happen when I used my sleep focus overnight, however I turned that option off and it continued to happen every morning when I wake up.

I’ve come formed it doesn’t just happen over night.. it seems to happen when it’s on charge for long periods of time or when on fast charging for short periods of time (I wonder if it triggers when it gets heated up 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Turning it off and on again seems to fix the issue or letting it cool down (normally an hour or so after taking it off charge) works.

It’s super weird that hardware action can trigger a software glitch 🤔

I too wouldn’t get my messages overnight however my iPad (on iPad OS 15) would get the messages. I’m updating the iPad now to latest version (which my iPhone 13 pro is on) and I’ll see if the issue messages stop showing up on the iPad

Anyways, I suppose there may be an update that addresses this soon.. fingers crossed. It’s quite inconvenient be annoying

Right?!? (Re: hardware action triggering a software glitch).

And since this has started, my iCloud backups have been wildly out of whack, but missing messages is what concerns me most. And my analytics logs on the phone seem to indicate all kinds of abnormal things going on as well.

I’m still waiting on a response from apple engineers. If it’s anything noteworthy, I’ll be sure to share.

Just so I understand...so it's not happening on your iPad (15.1.1) but continues to happen on your phone?

And regarding messages showing up on other devices but not your main phone - I have an older phone that I use as a wifi test phone / backup, also on 15.1.1 and using iCloud Messages. Messages are not freezing (so far) on that older phone. AND messages occasionally show up on that older phone that do not show up on my iPhone 13 (my 13 continues to have the Messages app freeze every time I put it on charge).

However, when I do an icloud backup of my older phone first, and then backup my 13 to iCloud, those missing messages have (so far) appeared on my 13.

Regardless, I'm very frustrated by almost a month of this right now. I hope there is an answer / fix soon.

Same issue here, with all of the same symptoms: icloud backup sizes increased 5x all of a sudden, messages app freezes power cycle needed, icloud messages turned itself off, previous icloud account mismatch error. I first noticed this problem when i migrated from a shared icloud storage plan to an individual one - could’ve been a coincidence, but did anybody else experience this? I also have an iPad on the same icloud account that is working flawlessly with icloud messages turned on.

15.2 also appears to have fixed it for me. i also got a new iphone 13 pro max and upgraded it to 15.2 and restored from my old phone’s backup and haven’t had any issues with the new phone.

As you noticed, I still have something funny going on with icloud backup sizes. my old phone is still backing up 10’s of GB, while my new phone is only backing up 2-3GB. i’m trading the old phone in, so not too concerned with it, but frustrating that this issue in icloud still persists. my ipad on the same icloud account also still has very large backup sizes.
