By iOS I presume you mean macOS (The iOS counterpart for mac's). Firstly you will need to find out the latest version of macOS available for your laptop. You can do that by putting the model of your MacBook into google and searching for "latest os" e.g "MacBook Air late 2012 latest os" then go to this website to download the appropriate version: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683. if you run into any other problems don't be afraid to ask, good luck.
