there is no software update option under my preferences, where else could it be? I would like to update my 2011 MacBook

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

That is because it was not added to System Prefs until macOS 10.14 Mojave. You appear to have 10.13 High Sierra.


What are you trying to update? The macOS verison? Safari? Something else?


What it your MacBook Pros's sub-model? (from About this Mac.") If upgrading the macOS version you must have a 2012 or newer to use Mojave and Catalina

There are also listings of hardware requirements for the different versions of macOS on that page.
