Hello,

I don't think the the iPhone 5 supports iOS 12:

Update your iPhone 5 to resume using App Store, iCloud, email, web, and other services - Apple Support

If you keep the iPhone 5, you'll have to get by with Apple's Messages app and other apps that are supported.
