connecting a disabled iphone to my itunes.

my son has disabled my old iphone putting in the passcode incorrectly too many times and i need to use it as a backup due to my current one being broken, it says to connect it to itunes but when i hook it up to my computer it wont even register that it is connected. how do i get it connected and fixed where i can use it until i can purchase another iphone?
