I have
"Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" and
"Sync only checked songs and videos" both checked (and I've cliked Done).
I have some songs in my iTunes on PC (Windows) that are checked. Yet, when I sync the iPhone, these items are not copied across to my iPhone. In fact, it seems that syncing checked items doesn't work at all.
Any help appreciated!

If you have enough space on your iPhone for the missing information, then we have a suggestion. Follow the steps to unsync those items, then restart your iPhone and the iTunes app. Then try to sync that content back on.
Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer
If you're still having an issue; that isn't likely something that can be resolved with a simple settings change or similar.
At that point, it could potentially be an issue with iTunes, or something on your computer blocking the sync (such as security software).

Hi, JustusR. In that case, you may want to attempt syncing with another computer (if possible) just to see if the issue persists there. That would let you know if it's an issue with the phone itself, or possibly the computer/iTunes.
Another step to try would be to remove iTunes and all components: Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later
Then see if this persists after reinstalling iTunes.
Aside from those two things, if it's software related, it could be something on your iPhone where a restore may be necessary.

Unfortunately it didn't work: even if I remove all the songs from the iPhone, it only wants to sync files that were there before. If I "tick" a new file, it won't sync, just ignores it. I've got plenty of space, and I only use Microsoft Defender with standard settings.
I've even deleted the Music App, and without it, it still only syncs certain songs. It seems there is some database on my iPhone that is locked.
