Catalina Security Update (19H1519) Breaks OpenGL on Intel HD Graphics, Stellerium planatarium application no longer launches.

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) running Catalina 10.15.7. After installing the latest security update (19H1519), Stellarium planatarium software no longer launches. Is Apple going to fix this?

It is up to the third party developer to fix their app to work with any changes Apple makes to macOS.

See if there is a newer update to the Stellerium app. If there is no newer update, then contact the developer of the Stellerium app for support.

Thank you HWTech for the reply! I've since learned that this issue affects not only Stellerium but countless applications running Catalina on Intel HD 4000 graphics. To my understanding, it is the Catalina 2021-007 update itself which causes the issue. The patch appears to introduce a bug preventing the GPU from being accessed.

To your knowledge has there ever been a situation where Apple has dropped support for hardware less than 5 years old?

I should add that Apple itself is also among the developers affected as even Safari will not render WebGL anymore.

Hopefully Apple will fix this. It would be the right thing to do as My Mac was less than 5 years old when the bug was introduced and they do list it as compatible.

The Intel HD 4000 graphics was used for a short time in late 2012 and early 2013 Macs that are now almost ten years old. These are the only machines affected by the faulty driver. There are a couple of workarounds being used. Reinstall Catalina and don't update past Security Update 2021-006. Use Time Machine to restore your Mac to just before the Security Update 2021-007 was applied. Wait for Apple to release a fix, assuming they will at some point.

As for your claim that your Mac was less than five years old when the ‘bug’ was introduced, that's simply not true. This issue showed up when the Security Update 2021-007 was released a few weeks ago and it only affects those older machines with Intel Graphics HD 4000

In either event you have options. As you probably have seen in other discussion threads about this you can reinstall Catalina, update to Security Update 2021-006 only, and be back in business. Or you can choose to wait for Apple to issue a patch. None of us here are Apple employees, just users like yourself, and we have no idea if or when Apple will do something about it. It depends on how many of these machines are still in use and how many users file reports/complaints about the issue. Apple usually responds to volume of complaints. I would suggest you call Apple Support (Get Support link at the top right of this page) and report the problem.
