iOS versions 12.4.2 - 12.5.5 are a special versions of iOS 12 which are only installable on devices which are incapable of supporting later versions of iOS. For iPhones these are the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6/6 Plus. For iPads these are the original iPad Air and the 2nd and 3rd generation iPad mini.

As your iPhone is running 12.5.5, it cannot run anything later - unless Apple releases another update of iOS 12 for your device (for info, the latest version is iOS 15). The reason is that all subsequent versions require a device with 2GB RAM. The reason you can't install apps is because they're incompatible with your phone, because most - if not all - recent apps require devices with 2GB RAM. If you have an iPhone 6/6 Plus your phone is now over 7 years old. The iPhone 5S is over 8 years old and the iPhone 5 over 9 years old.

If you want to run more recent apps, you will need to purchase a new phone. The iPhone 11 is still sold, if you can't afford an iPhone 13, and will run the latest version of iOS (which means apps you can't install on your current phone will work).

Here's a simple and fast way to see what is possible with your device, including updating it to the highest sub-version (e.g., 12.5.4 --> 12.5.5) of an iOS/iPadOS you may already have:

On your device, tap:

Settings > General > Software Update.

1. If it says your device is up to date there is nothing more you can do. If apps you are trying to use say you need a higher iOS version, you will need to buy a newer device if you want to run those apps or features.

2. If it says an update is available you will normally only be given one update selection which will be the highest available iOS version supported by your device. However, if you are running an iOS 14 version that is OS 14.5 or greater, you may see two options. Click on a link below for full instructions about how to update wirelessly, or using a computer (see links in document) if you have storage or connectivity issues. If the update listed is not equal to or higher than the iOS version you need to use a feature, you again will need to buy newer equipment if you want to use that feature.
