So will the new 14" MacBook Pro SDXC slots accept 1TB cards?

It's unclear to me whether this is a hardware or a system software issue. But in the past, the size of the cards has been limited.

Really— that is hard to believe (?)

I would not anticipate an issue with storage capacity on your new Mac.

Earlier Mac's may have had older SD or SDHC hardware (?)

SD (secure digital) cards are the oldest, least used and limited to 2GB of storage.

SDHC (high capacity) cards can store up to 32 GB of data,

SDXC (extended capacity) cards can store up to 2 terabytes (2000 GB)
