iMovie download issue

I'm running catalina 10.15.7 and when I try to download iMovie, I get the message "iMovie can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 11.5.1 or later is required." What's up?

That is correct. Unless you upgrade Catalina 10.15.7 to OS version 11.5.1 you will not be able to download the current version of iMovie. So, upgrade Catalina if you can do so.

Possibly you cannot upgrade Catalina because your computer is too old. You might still be able to update to the highest iMovie version that Catalina will run. For this to happen you must have, or at some point in time did have (but perhaps deleted it), an earlier version of iMovie 10 on your Mac.

Here's the procedure: To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the trash. (You can skip that step if you had iMovie 10 on your computer before, but deleted it.) Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar.   You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash (if you moved it there) and return it to the Applications folder.
