15" 2016 MBP Freezes with 10.14.6

Hi Apple Community:

I recently upgraded from 10.14.5 to 10.14.6. About a week or so after performing the install, my 15" 2016 MacBook Pro began to freeze - except for the cursor.

Here's the detail:

  1. Upon waking up the MBP from sleep mode, I sometimes find the MBP is not responsive except for the cursor. I can move the cursor around the screen, but, when I click on any object, the object is basically frozen - I tried clicking a file's window red close button, I tried to open a folder, I tried to restart or shut down the computer, etc - noting works.
  2. The sleep mode can be anywhere from 5 - 30 minutes or longer. I have not found any common timing issue.
  3. When I was working today (11/27/21), the MBP actually froze up while actively working on a file. The cursor was actually "stuck" on a file. I couldn't release the cursor from the file. I had to do a manual shut down using the on/off button.
  4. I use a 24" Apple Display and a 27" HP display - not at the same time.
  5. I use an OWC USB-C Dock.
  6. I also use the following Apple devices - Magic Pad (original battery type and newer internal battery type, not at the same time) and a new Magic Keyboard with internal battery.
  7. I also use a Wacom Bamboo CTE-450/K pad with included stylus.
  8. A long time ago, I signed up for the OS Beta program, although I no longer see the Beta Program listed when I go to Software Update in System Preferences.

I've searched in the Apply Community Forum and was not able to locate anything recent regarding freezing. I also tried to locate articles online and found simliar, but, not the issue I'm having.

My first thought was to upgrade to the current MacOS - that's what APple would suggest normally. I can't upgrade beyond Mojave becasue I am using PowerCADD, a 32 bit application. PC users are wating for the updated 64 bit version which is epected mid to late 2022.

My other thought was to perform a backup and perform a clean install hopefully bringing the OS back to 10.14.5. The only thing is, it's a pain to do and I most likely will not have the current security updates with 10.14.5.

Before I do anything as time consuming as a clean install, I'd like to know if anyone has had the same or similiar issue and has a solution.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks - Frank

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

If pastebin is a problem for you then workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

I'm confused. How did you manage to update to 10.14.6? That's Mojave which is now 3 versions old and Apple stopped issuing updates for it with the release of MacOS 10.15 (Catalina). The only version of MacOS you're able to update to now is 12 (Monterey), which is currently at 12.0.1. A 2016 MBP is quite capable of running MacOS 12.

Unconfuse me...

My 15" 2016 MacBook Pro received an update about two weeks ago to perform a security upgrade to 10.14.6. I peformed the upgrade to comply. You can ask Apple why it sent me the upgrade notification in System Preferences>Software Update.

Regarding upgrading to macOS 12, please read my entire document. I am running PowerCADD which is a 32 bit application. I cannot upgrade past Mojave. Mojave is the last macOS to support 32 bit app's.

Hopefully you are unconfused....

Hi BDAqua, thanks for the suggestions. I'll be working all day tomorrow and will work in Safe Mode to see if the issue is replicated there. And, then use in standard mode and see if the issue has cleared it self.

I'll keep the MBP running for the evening in Safe Mode including the apps I've had open to see if I can replicate the issue.

I'll review Etrechek and pull the date needed.

Thanks and have a great evening - Frank
