Any options for upgrading a 2008 MacBook Pro to a newer OS.

I have OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. I would like to be able to use the Numbers App but need an updated OS. I inherited this laptop from my father. I know it is old, but if I can just upgrade the OS, I don't have to recycle it, and can use it for at least a few more years.
