hp scanjet 5500c

Trying to get my hp 5500c to scan with my new Mac os10.6. i think i have downloaded the software, but mac says no scanner recognized. I am about to take a butter knife to my wrists.....
Can anyone help?
FYI: i had an hp 3030 all in one that worked with my Mac, except the scanner. i have bought a Canon all in one and a Brother all in one. The Brother works ok, but would rather have my hp 3030 if it would work.
