Hi Arthur Thompson,

welcome to the Apple Community.

The password you lost would be the one you would use to log-in to your e-Mail account online,

... on your eMail provider 's website. (Eg: at Yahoo, Google, Aol, or such.)

You may have saved the log-in password in your Safari passwords.

Eg: Safari > Preferences > Passwords > enter your Mac log-in or fingerprint to unlock > retrieve password.

Or

If you go to your eMail provider's log-in page, the log-in password may "autofill".

You may be able to retrieve the password, or change it to a new one, on your eMail provider's website.

Once you have the old, or new, password:

One way to restore your access to your iMac's Mail account would be to:

Click the Apple icon in the top menu bar > System Preferences > Internet Accounts

Remove the current (no password) Mail account (ie: using + / - at the bottom)

Add the Mail account back again .... entering the retrieved password when prompted.

(Internet accounts sets up your account to use with Mail)

Hope this works for you :-)
